St Mary the Virgin, Marholm

This ancient church of Our Lady is set in meadows surrounded by ancient Cedar trees on the southern edge of Marholm Village. This is a grade I listed building. The earliest part of the Church still standing is the squat NormanWestTower (c 1180AD), with its deeply splayed windows. The east wall of the tower is thinner than the others, which could suggest an earlier date, (i.e. a pre-existing nave against which the tower was built). The 13th Century Nave consists of Early English arcading. The Chancel was re-constructed c1530 by Sir William Fitzwilliam, who bought the nearby Milton Park Estate from Peterborough Abbey in c1500. Although Milton is in Castor Parish, the Fitzwilliams used Marholm as their parish church.  Within the chancel there are monuments to members of the Fitzwilliam family of nearby Milton Hall. The windows include the armorials of the Fitzwilliam family as well as fragments of medieval glass replaced at a later stage.
